Overview of the working plan for APIMONDIA for the period 2004 and 2005

LJUBLJANA - SLOVENIA
25 - 29 August 2003
In order to
fulfil the obligations of APIMONDIA
to its members and to the whole apicultural community the secretary general is
requested in accordance with the budget to employ staff at our office in Rome to
make sure we meet our obligations.
The communications between
APIMONDIA and the members and the
whole apicultural world must be improved and increased.
The
APIMONDIA website www.apimondia.org will be updated with new
information and the digital version of APIACTA will be available on the website.
APIMONDIA
will work closely together with the Irish Congress Organising Committee to
prepare the 39th APIMONDIA congress in Ireland 2005.
APIMONDIA
will prepare specialists symposia and seminars, more have been announced.
APIMONDIA
will take actions to increase the contacts and the recognition by international
organisations.
APIMONDIA
will organise an internal workshop to discuss future plans, ideas, goals and
strategies for new development in the organisation.
APIMONDIA
will request governments and research institutions to pay special attention to
the protection and maintenance of indigenous bee races, and to undertake
research in order to reduce the risk of disappearance of important genetic
material and hence maintain the bee's natural resistance to diseases and its
ability to adapt to local climatic conditions.
APIMONDIA
recommends against the introduction of species or races of bees to areas where
they are not already present, without expert consideration of the consequences.
Expert consideration should involve consultation with the APIMONDIA Executive
Council.
APIMONDIA
will, in collaboration with the ICPR, continue to monitor the possible impact on
bees and beekeeping from the further development and commercial use of
Genetically Modified Crops. We will pay attention to the use of the foraging
behaviour of honeybees for other purposes than pollination purposes.
APIMONDIA
will compile and distribute information concerning the, until now underestimated,
importance of honeydew as a natural resource for honey production.
APIMONDIA
will work on the compiling of information concerning the importance of bees as
pollinators of the natural flora. Attention will be given to the conservation of
such natural resources for bees that are kept by beekeepers.
APIMONDIA
will pay attention to the pollination of crops in the tropics. The consequences
for traditional beekeeping and the pollination of plants of the spread of the
Varroa mite in Africa will be given special consideration.
