"LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING"
"GENTLE BEES FOR THE BACKYARD GARDENER"
"GONE TO THE BEES"

Vancouver, BC, January, 2002. Looks can be deceiving. Mason bees look rather like bluebottle flies but instead of visiting questionable sites, mason bees visit spring flowers and pollinate them. Back yard gardeners can house these bees and ensure pollinated flowers and good fiait production. That is why backyard gardeners today are learning about mason bees and setting out nests to attract them.

Pollination with Mason Bees will be published in March 2002. This book describes the first step of setting out a nest, and more detailed information on looking alter bees in order to reap a bountiful fruit harvest. It is the first book that includes information on nest construction and mason bee population build-up. This book is organized as a hands-on resource. It is an introduction to bees, particular to mason bees, and clearly describes how one can get started with mason bees. The detailed pen and ink sketches (52) provide additional information on details presented in the text.

This book will assist - backyard gardeners, naturalists and budding biologists to learn about the wonderful resource of wild and native bees. It is pertinent for gardeners throughout North America, since low numbers of pollinators are becoming the norm rather than the exception. The demand for mason bees comes from the absence of wild honey bees due to mites. The absence of honey bees has led to poor pollination and low fruit yields.

Company President, Dr. Margriet Dogterom says that pollination is an essential process for fruit production. These friendly bees are easily attracted to the garden, housed in nests, and increased in numbers to ensure that the gardener will reap the rewards of plentiful fruit.

Sincerely

Dr. Margriet Dogterom

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT: "POLLINATION WITH MASON BEES", DR. Margriet Dogterom

Shawn Devlin, B Sc, MPM. Vancouver, B.C. Canada. Field Biologist

"This book is a very good resource for people who are interested in using mason bees for pollination. There is plenty of information, but it never gets too complicated. I enjoyed reading it and it reminded me of why I enjoyed working with bees. This book is an invaluable tool for anybody wishing to know more about mason bees."

Elizabeth Croft, Coquitlam, B.C. Canada. Freelance writer for magazines and documentaries.

"Dr. Dogterom's book is a clear concise read, understandable to readers who know little about bees. At the same time, it's replete with the necessary directions to develop nests and healthy populations of Mason Bees in a variety of settings.

While wisely brief for the general reader (78 pages), the Guide to Further Reading has a comprehensive list for the enthusiast.

Creating and maintaining mason bee nests receives extensive treatment. The nests can be created In home workshops using every day tools and materials. These simple designs are clearly described and a reasonable number of options provided.

While the book is aimed at adults, cultivating the Mason Bees provides an obvious natural science project for families. Children can assist in building the nests and observe the results of their handiwork. Younger kids will be happy to know that Mason Bees require a mud puddle where the bees collect the mud for their nests.

The author has included quotes form a turn of the century publication "The MasonBee" by J H. Fabre. With quaint Victorian language and overt enthusiasm, these references nicely round out the book and remind us that even a little nature can inspire wonder. With her conversational style and careful detail, the author also shares her fascination for nature, bees and the abundance they produce."

Ella Benndorf, 2001 Nature Garden Winner, Coquitlam, B.C. Canada

"Margriet Dogterom's "Pollination With Mason Bees" is a comprehensive, entertaining guide for increasing your mason bee population and your fruit yield. The beautiful line drawings make this book a first choice for the novice just beginning this hobby or the experienced mason beekeeper who requires a reference book with precise details such as how to build or clean a nest. There is also a fascinating coverage of social bees such as honey and bumblebees. The excellent glossary and index makes "Pollination with Mason Bees" a must for every fruit grower and nature gardener."

Hugh Laughlin, Gardener and mason bee enthusiast. Chilliwack, B.C. Canada
